What’s Coming Up – Week of May 3-7, 2021

Phone Reminder

  • Parents, please remind your child of the expectations regarding phones at school.
  • Students should not have phones during the school day.
  • If phones are brought to school, they must be powered off and remain in students’ backpacks.
  • Please be aware that student belongings are not stored in locked areas.
  • Loss or damage is the responsibility of the student.

M-STEP Update

  • Fifth graders worked so hard to complete the M-STEP. 
  • Students who were absent for test sessions will begin their make up sessions next week.

Camp Update

  • All fifth grade students in the district will have an extended day camp experience at CranHill Ranch.
  • The date for Georgetown students will be Thursday, June 3.
  • Students can take their normal mode of transportation to school in the morning.
  • Estimated arrival back to school will be around 9:00 PM.
  • Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are not allowed to bring parent chaperones.

Optional Fundraiser 

  • The camp experience cost for this year is $60.
  • Click here for more information about this optional fundraising opportunity. 
  • Fundraiser ends on Monday, May 3.
  • Once the fundraiser is wrapped up, students will receive a balance sheet explaining any remaining balances and providing details about payment of balances.

Middle School Transition Information

    • On Thursday, April 29th the students were given an opportunity to try different musical instruments to see if they are interested in band or orchestra for next school year.
    • Monday, May 3
      • Location: Riley Street Middle School
      • Start times: 6:30, 7:00, or 7:30
    • Tuesday, May 4
      • Location: Baldwin Street Middle School
      • Start times: 6:30, 7:00, or 7:30
    • All meetings will include the same information. Choose the location and start time that works for your schedule.
    • Thursday, May 6 – Class Zoom meetings with middle school staff

  • Remaining M-STEP testing dates for 5th grade:
    • April 27 and 29th. Please avoid any outside appointments on those days in which your child will be gone from school.

      • If your child is interested in participating in band, choir, or orchestra next year, please attend one of these meetings.

March 9 – Baldwin Street Middle School Visit 10:30-2:00 (Mrs. Walenta’s class only)

March 11 – Baldwin Street Middle School Visit 10:30-2:00 (Mrs. Ball and Mr. Cooley’s classes only)

Math:

  • We are beginning unit 6, Operations and Word problems.
  • Students should be completing MobyMax Fact Fluency practice at home for five minutes per day unless they have mastered all math facts.

ELA:

  • We’re beginning a test prep unit, which is a review of topics covered in 5th grade.Students should be reading for 20 minutes each night and filling out the reading log.

Science: 

  • We’re continuing our unit: Go With the Flow which investigates invasive species and their impact on our waterways.

Social Studies:

  • We are continuing our fifth unit, Road to Revolution. We will be examining the events that led to the colonists declaring independence from Britain.

Middle School Music Information Nights

  • The middle school music programs will be hosting 3 information nights for parents and students interested in participating.
  • All events are the same, so families may choose the option that work best for them:
    • Tuesday, March 12 – 5:30-9:00 PM – Riley Street Middle School
    • Wednesday, March 13 – 5:30-9:00 PM – HHS main campus media center
    • Thursday, March 14 – 5:30-9:00 PM – Baldwin Street Middle School

Book Fair:

  • The Scholastic book fair will be at Georgetown next week,
  • Our class will preview on Tuesday, March 12.
  • We will shop on Thursday, March 14 between 10:00 and 10:30.

  • We are continuing Unit 5: focusing on division of whole numbers and decimals.

ELA:

  • We will begin a research unit in both reading and writing pertaining to the Revolutionary War.

Middle School Music Program Information

Is your fifth-grader interested in participating in one of the music programs in middle school?

Click here for information on the band, choir, and orchestra programs offered to middle school students in Hudsonville and how to determine which program or instrument might be a good fit for your child. Please take the time to review this information as there have been some changes to the process this year. Most notably, instrument fittings and choir information will be available during the evening meeting times rather than during the school day.

April 10, 11, 12 & 17 – M-STEP testing dates for fifth grade. Please avoid scheduling appointments during the school day on these dates if at all possible.

  • We will be finishing up Unit 6: Operations and Word Problems

ELA:

  • We are working on Text-Dependent Analysis which requires responding to reading through thoughtful, crafted writing.

Social Studies:

  • We will be having a social studies test on Tuesday on the Revolutionary War. Students should be using their foldable study guide and Quizzizz to review.

Upcoming Social Studies Test and Course Selection Sheet Reminder

We will be taking a social studies test on the American Revolution next Tuesday, March 27. Students completed a foldable study guide that they should use to help review for the test. I also emailed students today with a link to a Quizzizz review game; this is another resource that students have found to be helpful in the past.

I also wanted to remind you that the pink middle school course selection sheets must be turned in to me by Friday, March 23. 

We will visit the middle school on Monday, March 26. Your child should have brought home a letter from food service regarding lunch for that day. You can also see a copy here.
