Summer Learning Opportunity – Laker Writing Camps

Does your child love to write? He or she might enjoy attending one of the Laker Writing Camps!

What is it?

For one week, your future novelist, poet, or journalist will have the chance to explore the wonders of writing with some of West Michigan’s finest teachers.

Laker Writing Camps offer students an opportunity to explore many styles of writing in a fun environment.  Students participate in activities that create a community of writers and provide nurturing support for developing authors. To prompt writing, campers and facilitators may travel from their camp site to various age-appropriate places of interest, learning and inspiration.

Teachers plan writing activities that build confidence while providing the writing tools that inspire creative thinking and author’s craft. Campers write a variety of pieces such as poems, autobiographical sketches, short stories, and nature observations while engaging in the writing process of drafting, revising, responding and editing. Finally, each camper will choose a piece of his or her writing for publication in the camp anthology.

The Laker Writing Camp is an outreach effort of the LMWP to encourage and nurture young writers. Staff consists of Lake Michigan Writing Project Teacher-Consultants who have been identified as outstanding teachers of writing and nurturing role models for campers.

Summer Learning

Keep On Learning With Reading & Mobymax

Dear Parents,

Studies have shown that students can lose up to 50% of learning during the summer vacation.   Georgetown is challenging you and your child to “KEEP ON LEARNING” this summer to prevent summer slide.  There are two ways to record your learning time:

  • Reading:  Log into  this form  to record the number of minutes you read.  You can record each day or enter the total for each week.
  • MOBYMAX Math and Reading:  We recommend that each child consistently use MobyMax each week in the core areas of reading and mathematics. If interested, you can also choose to work on other learning modules.  Spending just a few minutes each day on Mobymax will help to reduce  “summer slide” and keep your child’s learning skills fresh over the summer.

Our goals for students over the summer are below. Students who reach or exceed goals will be entered in a drawing for an Amazon Gift Card (1 per grade). This is for their grade next year.

Reading Minutes Mobymax
  • First Grade: 100 minutes
  • Second Grade: 200 minutes
  • Third Grade: 300 minutes
  • Fourth Grade: 400 minutes
  • Fifth Grade:  400 minutes
  • First Grade: 100 pts
  • Second Grade: 200 pts
  • Third Grade: 300 pts

Does your child love science or writing? If so, you may want to look into these summer day camp opportunities.

2017 Laker Writing Camps

These camps are an outreach of the Lake Michigan Writing Project, and there are a few date and location options to choose from. I have participated in a Lake Michigan Writing Project program for writing teachers, and it was an amazing experience!

Van Andel Education Institute Summer Camp

This is a weeklong morning camp, and there are two different weeks to choose from. The focus for students going into 6th grade in the fall is “Environmental Forensics: What’s in the Water?” I’ve had the opportunity to visit the VAEI facility, and spending time in their labs and classrooms would be exciting for curious young scientists.
